Family Law Solutions Through Collaboration
Sometimes couples are in a unique position — a position where they realize they should not go forward with their marriage, but still can work together to make rational decisions about life after divorce. These couples are often best suited to approach the termination of their marriage through collaborative divorce methods.
At the Worthington, Ohio, offices of Ralph A. Kerns & Associates, we use 30 years of legal experience to help spouses resolve divorce issues efficiently and effectively through collaborative methods. Lawyer Ralph Kerns is a qualified mediator who has completed coursework required of collaborative divorce professionals.
What is Collaborative law?
Collaborative law is a method of resolving conflict where the spouses participate in a four-way conference (a type of divorce mediation) that includes each spouse and his or her lawyer. Together, they hammer out all the issues that apply to them. This may include a wide range of issues:
- Division of property and liability
- Child support
- Child custody and visitation (parenting time)
- Alimony/spousal support
Often, the decision that couples create through collaborative law practices leave them happier than orders made by a judge. This is because each spouse has more control over the final outcome in mediation. They do not have to rely on the decision of a stranger to predict the outcome of an important family law matter. Their personal participation shows them that together they can resolve complex problems not only involving themselves but their children and in so doing perhaps set them on a path for better solving the problems that they will encounter as they proceed through life as divorced parents sharing certain goals.
